STEALING FROM Thiebaud

A NEW BODY OF WORK

I’m moved beyond words by your art…your creation…experiencing all the emotions. So deeply moving and so powerful. I’m just in awe!!!! I feel like I just went on a beautiful enriching journey. Yes…I can see this in the walls of the exhibit. Yes…empathy transfer. Wow!!! Nancy!!! Wow!!!

There’s so much heart in it, that’s what  moves me. It touches that place in us we seldom share or talk about but when we feel it, it instantly connects us to what is to be human. It’s universal. You’ve tapped into something vital and true, something we all need during these turbulent times. I really like your writing as well as your photographs. It is really a moving piece. I just  love rereading your statement, so pertinent! You’re touching people with your art, in the heart, the profound thing any artist can do. It’s going to touch a lot of people.

What appeals to me in this series is the universal quality of photography – not everyone paints in oils, but EVERYONE takes photographs, so everyone can immediately empathize with the images Ms. Witherell has created. I saw the Thiebaud show twice. Each time, I was in wonderment at how he pulled from prior artworks and masterfully made them his own.  But I’m not a master painter, so in neither of my visits did I take this further, to consider who/what I or other artists might have chosen and how they would adapt them. This is what I like best about the series – it makes me consider who I would select from my own life and how I would picture them, either as reflections of Thiebaud’s own work or of the original painting which inspired him. I appreciate that Ms. Witherell has highlighted a full range of emotion and character and personality: Figures Eating and Joyful Nude are warm and sweet and, well, joyful even thought the Thiebaud images are not. Witherell’s text with each piece is clear and helpful.
